Why is the scale of the city important?
The City is where the most critical adaptations will take place:
More than half the people in the world live in cities
Consume the majority of energy produced
Produce the majority of waste products
Cities account for close to 80% of the carbon dioxide emitted globally (Newman et al. 2009)
What Are Cities Doing?
Many cities have designed and implemented Climate Action Plans (CAP’s) that layout strategies to cut greenhouse gas emissions and move towards a sustainable future. Although all CAP’s are unique, similarities do exist. Some main themes include: Buildings, Transportation, Energy, Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventories and Public Outreach.
- 2030’s mission is to rapidly transform the built environment from the major contributor of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to a central part of the solution to the climate and energy crises.
- changing the way cities, communities, infrastructure, and buildings, are planned, designed, and constructed
